Turtles That 'Pee' through Their Mouth

There's a species of soft-shelled turtle in China that 'pees' in puddles through its mouth.

Some in the animal kingdom have definitely evolved some rather interesting and somewhat weird physiological traits. Perhaps more so than others are turtles; it's well-known that some turtles can breathe through their butts. It also turns out that there's a species of turtle that can pee through its mouth.

Researchers say that the soft-shelled species of turtle in China stick their heads into puddles and relieve themselves by wiggling their tongues.

Initially, the researchers were unsure exactly what the behavior was. They purchased live turtles from a market and kept them in water to monitor their habits.

They found that only 6% of the urine's main ingredient, urea, was expelled in the urine from their rear ends.

The turtles were then removed from the water and, instead, provided with a puddle as a "mouth rinse". The researchers found that the turtles dipped their heads in the puddle and 'spat out' 50 times more urea.

However, this ability to orally expel urea is not technically urination as it travels to the turtles' mouth through their bloodstream.
