Dave Goelz worked on John Deere tractors as an industrial designer. In 1973, Jim Henson hired him, but only as a puppet builder. Three years later, he got his own puppet: a blue, big-nosed oddball named Gonzo. He never put Gonzo down. In 2026, he performed Gonzo again in the ABC and Disney+ Muppet Show revival. Fifty years later, he still performs Gonzo.

He Designed John Deere Tractors. Then He Became Gonzo.

Before he ever picked up a Muppet, Dave Goelz spent his days working on John Deere tractors. He had no plan to end up on television, let alone become one of its most recognizable characters.

A Designer, Not a Performer

Goelz graduated college with a degree in industrial design. His first job was at Henry Dreyfuss Associates, a design firm whose clients included John Deere Tractors, American Airlines and Polaroid.

"Their clients were John Deere Tractors, which I worked on, and American Airlines and Polaroid Camera," Goelz later said in an interview.

He went on to spend about three and a half years at Hewlett-Packard, designing measurement instruments like laser interferometers. Puppets were nowhere in the plan.

Hired to Build, Not to Perform

A growing curiosity about Sesame Street pulled Goelz toward Jim Henson's workshop. Henson's own archive records the exact date: June 11, 1973, "Dave Goelz begins with us."

He came in as a designer and puppet builder, not a performer. Goelz spent his early years at Henson's side building puppets and props for other people's characters.

A Puppet of His Own

In 1976, Goelz traveled to London to work on the original series of The Muppet Show. There, he was promoted from puppet builder to principal performer.

The character was a blue, big-nosed oddball named Gonzo. Goelz kept him.

He went on to perform other original characters too, including Zoot, Waldorf and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew. But Gonzo became the role that never left his hands.

Still Gonzo, Fifty Years Later

On February 4, 2026, ABC and Disney+ aired a Muppet Show revival special marking the show's 50th anniversary. Dave Goelz reprised Gonzo alongside his other original characters.

The tractor designer who was hired to build puppets, not perform them, has now been the one man inside Gonzo for half a century. Fifty years later, he still performs Gonzo.
