Peter Cullen, the voice actor who voices Optimus Prime, also voices Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.
Optimus Prime and Eeyore Share the Same Voice Actor
Imagine the most heroic robot leader in the galaxy and the gloomiest donkey in the Hundred Acre Wood. Now imagine they sound exactly alike. That's the incredible range of Peter Cullen, the voice actor who's spent decades bringing both Optimus Prime and Eeyore to life.
Cullen first became the voice of Optimus Prime in the 1980s Transformers animated series, creating that distinctive deep, authoritative tone that defined the Autobot leader. When Michael Bay's live-action Transformers films launched in 2007, Cullen returned to the role, proving that some voices are simply irreplaceable. He based Optimus's noble sound on his older brother Larry, a Vietnam veteran who told him to "be strong enough to be gentle."
From Heroic Leader to Lovable Pessimist
In 1988, Cullen took on a completely different character: Eeyore, Winnie the Pooh's perpetually melancholic friend. The slow, mournful delivery of "Thanks for noticin' me" couldn't be more different from "Autobots, roll out!" Yet both characters share Cullen's remarkable ability to convey emotion and personality through voice alone.
What makes this range even more impressive is that Cullen has said these two roles are among his personal favorites. At conventions, fans are often stunned when he switches between Optimus's commanding presence and Eeyore's dejected sighs in seconds.
The Vocal Chameleon
Cullen's resume goes far beyond robots and donkeys. He also provided the terrifying vocal effects for the Predator in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film, voiced Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, and played the evil AI car KARR in Knight Rider.
His contributions to voice acting earned him recognition at the highest levels. In 2010, Hasbro inducted him into the Transformers Hall of Fame—one of the first four humans to receive that honor.
The next time you hear Optimus Prime deliver an inspiring speech about freedom or Eeyore glumly lose his tail again, remember: behind both characters is the same legendary voice actor, proving that true talent knows no limits—whether you're saving the universe or just trying to find your tail in the woods.
