There are scrolls from the Edo period (1603-1868) that feature drawings depicting Japanese people engaging in a farting contest (he-gassen).
There are a number of drawings, including men blasting out forceful gusts from their rears at other men, women, and even a cat. There are also men taking aim with their farts from horseback.
It is believed that the scrolls also have a deeper meaning, reflecting social and political sentiments at the time.
Drawings similar to these were apparently used to ridicule westerners near the end of the Edo period.
