A Diagnosis That Changed Everything

In 1991, Keanu's younger sister Kim was diagnosed with leukemia. She was in her early twenties. The disease would take nearly a decade to beat. For Keanu, who was becoming one of the biggest action stars in the world, the diagnosis immediately reordered his priorities. According to multiple reports, he put upcoming projects on hold, sold his home, and relocated to be near Kim during her treatment - a period that would span most of the 1990s.

He Didn't Just Write a Check

What made Keanu's support unusual was how hands-on it was. He didn't just fund her treatment from a distance. According to reporting from the Daily Mail and multiple entertainment outlets, he cooked her meals, cleaned her house, and personally helped prepare and administer her medications throughout the treatment process. He reportedly spent $5 million on various therapies to support her recovery.

In 1995, Kim gave a rare interview to PEOPLE magazine and described her brother simply: "My brother is my prince. He listens to every word, to every comma after every word, that you are saying."

The Decade It Took

Kim's battle lasted nearly ten years. Keanu's career - which included Speed, The Devil's Advocate, and The Matrix - continued during this time, but he was consistently scaling back from the demands of Hollywood stardom to make time for her. He was publicly and privately her primary support throughout that entire period.

Kim entered remission in the early 2000s. She eventually settled in Rome, where Keanu is known to visit regularly. A 2023 photo of the two vacationing together in Italy circulated widely online.

A Foundation, Quietly

The experience shaped Keanu's relationship with his wealth. He told Ladies Home Journal in 2009: "I have a private foundation that's been running for five or six years, and it helps aid a couple of children's hospitals and cancer research. I don't like to attach my name to it, I just let the foundation do what it does."

Kim is alive. She and Keanu are still close. He never made a press release out of any of it.
