Patrick Stewart stepped off the stage at the 2013 Comicpalooza in Houston and held a fan who said she had survived abuse. He had just told the room he supports the charity Refuge in his mother's name, because he couldn't help her when his father abused her. "You never have to go through that again, you're safe now," he told her. Stewart died on Wednesday at 86. The charity he named still shelters survivors.
Patrick Stewart and the Fan He Held
At Comicpalooza in Houston in May 2013, a fan stood up during a Patrick Stewart panel and told him she had survived abuse. Stewart, who died on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 86, answered her with a story about his own mother and then stepped off the stage to hold her.
A Question From a Star Trek Fan
The fan thanked Stewart for a speech he had given against domestic violence in 2009. She asked about his work on the issue.
Stewart told the room that the violence had been close to home. He said he saw his mother suffer it when he was a boy, and that he could not stop it. Salon, which covered the panel the same week, quoted him rejecting the idea that his mother had done anything to provoke it: violence, he said, is never a choice a man should make.
"Because I Couldn't Help Her Then"
He explained why he campaigns. "I do what I do in my mother's name because I couldn't help her then. Now I can," Stewart said, according to NBC News.
He named two charities. Refuge, a UK charity that runs safe houses for people escaping domestic violence, was the one for his mother. Combat Stress, a UK charity that helps veterans with the lasting effects of war, was the one for his father, a Second World War soldier who suffered what was then called shell shock.
Salon reported that Stewart had been a patron of Refuge since 2007, and that he said at the panel the work was one of his proudest accomplishments.
The Hug
By the fan's own account, the moderator asked, "Do you want a hug?" and Stewart did not hesitate. He smiled, hopped off the stage, wrapped her in his arms and told her, "You never have to go through that again, you're safe now."
Video of the exchange spread quickly and was picked up by NPR member stations, NBC and Salon in the days that followed.
The Man Behind Picard
Most fans knew Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films. His spokesperson announced that he died at home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
Refuge, the charity he named at the panel, still runs safe houses today.
