Willie Nelson helped start Farm Aid in 1985 to raise money for family farmers. In 1991 the government put his own 44-acre Texas ranch up for auction over back taxes. More than 40 farmers, some from South Dakota, came to the courthouse and asked bidders to stay away. A lawyer for a farm group bought the ranch and held it until Willie got it back. At 93, he played Farm Aid again in September.

The Farmers Who Saved Willie Nelson's Ranch

In January 1991, the government put Willie Nelson's 44-acre ranch near Austin up for auction to collect back taxes. Instead of a bidding war, the courthouse filled with farmers, and the people Willie had spent years helping made sure his home did not go to a stranger.

A Ranch Nobody Would Bid On

The government had seized Nelson's assets on November 9, 1990, over a huge tax debt. His Texas property was first offered for sale on January 26, 1991, and no bidders came forward.

The third attempt to sell it was held at the Hays County Courthouse.

Forty Farmers at the Courthouse

More than 40 farmers, some from as far away as South Dakota, appeared at the courthouse to show their support for Nelson.

Farm activist Wayne Cryts, of Puxico, Missouri, made an impassioned speech urging the crowd to boycott the bidding. Other farmers walked up to would-be buyers and made quiet, face-to-face appeals.

Cryts described his message: Willie "has brought hope to farmers, helped feed farm families" and backed the groups that help them.

The Lawyer Who Held the Deed

On January 29, 1991, the third day the property was offered, the ranch sold. The buyer was attorney John Arens, who represents the American Agriculture Movement, a Washington-based lobbying group for family farmers. He bought it at the request of some of its members.

Arens said he would hold the property until the farmers could raise enough money to buy it for Nelson, or until Nelson could buy it himself. Nelson got the ranch back; accounts say the buyer sold it back to him, but none give a date or terms.

Several accounts describe the buyer as a Willie Nelson fan acting for farmers he had helped through Farm Aid over the years. Nelson settled his larger tax debt by 1993 through a deal that included his compilation album The IRS Tapes: Who'll Buy My Memories?

Why the Farmers Came

Nelson, with Neil Young and John Mellencamp, started Farm Aid in 1985. The first concert was held on September 22, 1985, at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois, and drew about 80,000 people.

The benefit concerts continue. On September 26, 2026, Farm Aid played in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with Nelson, now 93, on the bill alongside Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews and others.
