When the cast and crew of Field of Dreams packed up and left an Iowa cornfield in 1988, the baseball diamond they had carved into it was supposed to disappear too. A farmer named Don Lansing decided otherwise, and decades later the field is still there and strangers are still showing up to play catch.

A Farm Since 1906

Lansing's family had worked that patch of ground near Dyersville, Iowa since 1906, long before anyone thought to build a movie set on it.

When the filmmakers came asking to film there, Lansing agreed to let his cornfield become part of the movie.

Part of the diamond sat on his land. The rest, including left and center field, belonged to his neighbor, Al Ameskamp.

The Diamond That Wouldn't Disappear

Once filming wrapped, the standard plan was to plow the set under and return the ground to corn, the way the rest of the farm looked.

Lansing kept his portion exactly as the crew had built it instead. He added a small souvenir stand and let people wander onto the field.

He never charged for admission or parking, taking in only what visitors spent at the stand.

One Field, Two Neighbors

Ameskamp took the opposite approach at first. The year after filming ended, he replanted his half of the outfield in corn and went back to farming it like normal.

A year later, he changed his mind. He restored his portion of the field to grass and opened his own small souvenir stand alongside Lansing's.

For years the site existed as two neighboring farms, two separate stands, and one shared baseball diamond that visitors could walk across without ever noticing where one property ended and the other began.

The Pilgrimage Keeps Growing

Word of mouth did the rest. By the film's 20th anniversary, roughly 65,000 people a year were driving to the site, many of them bringing a glove just to have a catch on the grass.

Lansing eventually bought out the Ameskamp portion in 2007, putting the whole field under one owner for the first time since the cameras left.

The site later changed hands and grew into a larger baseball complex, hosting a Major League Baseball game on the property in 2021, but the original diamond Lansing refused to plow under is still the one visitors walk out onto.
