In 1867, New York firefighters sent a hose carriage to Civil War-ravaged Columbia, South Carolina. It sank with its ship, so they paid for a second. A Columbia man hoped his city could return the kindness one day. After 9/11, middle schoolers near Columbia raised over $500,000 to replace a Brooklyn fire truck destroyed that day. A piece of the old truck's door is on display in Columbia today.
