Most touring rock bands leave the flying to someone else. Iron Maiden's frontman decided he would rather sit up front. Bruce Dickinson, the band's singer since 1981, holds a full airline pilot's license, and for years he has used it to get his own band around the planet.

A Real Airline Career, Not a Publicity Stunt

Dickinson's flying credentials are not a hobby prop. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot License, the highest civilian pilot qualification, and spent years as a working captain for the UK carrier Astraeus, flying Boeing 757s carrying ordinary paying passengers between Iron Maiden commitments.

In 2006 he piloted a charter that evacuated British citizens from Lebanon during the Israel-Hezbollah conflict. In 2008 he flew a planeload of British soldiers home from Afghanistan, landing to families waving handmade signs on the tarmac.

From a Modified 757 to a Leased 747

Dickinson first put his license to use for the band on the 2008 to 2011 world tours, captaining a customized Boeing 757 nicknamed Ed Force One.

For the 2016 Book of Souls tour, Iron Maiden needed more room for their stage production, so they leased a retired Air France Boeing 747-400 from Air Atlanta Icelandic. Dickinson earned a fresh type rating specifically to captain the much larger jet, and the plane was repainted with a giant image of the band's skeleton mascot, Eddie, across the tail.

36 Countries, 12 Tons of Gear, One Cockpit

The Book of Souls World Tour ran to 117 shows across 36 countries on six continents.

The 747 carried the band, the touring crew, and more than 12 tons of stage equipment in its cargo hold without any structural modification, something the smaller 757 could never manage. Dickinson was one of three qualified captains who rotated flying the jumbo jet leg to leg.

The End of the Jumbo Era

Boeing built its last 747 in 2023, closing out 55 years of production. Asked to reflect on flying one, Dickinson didn't hesitate: "It's just like landing an armchair."

He credited the plane's huge wing for making a smooth touchdown almost automatic, joking that a good 747 landing is 80 percent the airplane and only 20 percent the pilot.

Iron Maiden's own Ed Force One kept flying commercially for years after the tour, repainted without the Eddie livery, before making its last flight in 2022. It was then retired and stored at Kemble in the Cotswolds, where it was scrapped in 2024.

Still Flying, Still Touring

Dickinson is still Iron Maiden's frontman, and the band is marking its 50th anniversary with the "Run For Your Lives" stadium tour across North America from late August through September 2026, with Megadeth as support.

Whether or not he's in the cockpit this time, the man singing "Number of the Beast" at night has spent his career making sure the whole show gets there safely.
