For decades, players have passed by the "Just Visiting" corner of the Monopoly board without knowing the prisoner behind bars had a name. But he does: Jake the Jailbird, and the mustachioed officer pointing him toward his cell is Officer Edgar Mallory.

These character names weren't part of the original 1935 game. They remained anonymous for over 50 years until Philip Orbanes published The Monopoly Companion in 1988, officially naming every character on the board and in the card decks. Suddenly, the sad-faced convict and stern policeman had identities.

The Dynamic Duo of Game Board Justice

Officer Edgar Mallory appears on the "Go to Jail" space, forever frozen in the act of directing unfortunate players to incarceration. His counterpart Jake sits in the "In Jail/Just Visiting" corner, gripping the bars with a perpetually dejected expression. They're two sides of the same coin—the law and the lawbreaker.

What makes their story particularly amusing is that we never learn what crime Jake committed. Did he refuse to pay rent? Embezzle from the bank? The game offers no backstory, leaving players to imagine what landed this cartoon criminal behind bars. Given Monopoly's themes, financial crimes seem likely.

More Than Just Decoration

While Mr. Monopoly (the wealthy mascot with the top hat and mustache) gets all the attention, Jake and Officer Mallory serve an important gameplay function. They represent one of the game's most strategic elements: jail can be either a punishment early in the game or a blessing late in the game when landing on developed properties means financial ruin.

The characters have appeared in various forms across different Monopoly editions and merchandise. Steam trading cards feature both characters together, cementing their status as an inseparable pair in Monopoly lore.
