In May 2011, an EF5 tornado—the most violent category possible—carved a mile-wide path through Joplin, Missouri. The UAE donated $5 million to Joplin's schools through the Red Crescent Authority, the Islamic world's equivalent of the Red Cross. But rather than just writing a check, they specified exactly how the money should be used: to purchase a laptop computer for every single high school student in the district.

The donation provided approximately 2,800 laptops—one for each student enrolled at Joplin High School. These weren't budget models either. The district used the funds to buy quality machines that students could take home, transforming what had been a catastrophic loss into an opportunity for educational advancement.
