In 2010, a Korean man named Lee Jin-gyu held a wedding ceremony to marry his life-sized body pillow (called a "dakimakura") featuring an anime character. A friend in a priest costume officiated the ceremony.

In December 2014, Portsmouth runner Ben Chudley traced the words "Will You Marry Me" through the city's streets on his GPS running app, then showed his girlfriend Olivia Abdul the route in person. She said yes.
