If you have seen the 1986 movie Hoosiers, you have seen the Hoosier Gym. The tiny brick gymnasium in Knightstown, Indiana, played home court to the fictional Hickory Huskers on screen. What most viewers do not know is that it is a real building, and real teams still play real games inside it today.

A Gym the Whole Town Paid For

Knightstown built the gym in December 1921. The town raised more than $14,400 to construct it, a large sum for a small Indiana community at the time.

The gym served as the local high school's home court for 45 years, hosting games and community events until it closed in 1966.

Twenty Years of Silence, Then Hollywood

For two decades the old gym sat mostly unused. Then, in the mid-1980s, filmmakers scouting Indiana for a basketball movie found it.

About one third of Hoosiers was filmed inside the building, according to Wikipedia's account of the gym's history. The crew hung "Go Hickory" banners and dressed the space to look like a 1950s Indiana high school gym, much of which still hangs there today.

The Building That Almost Came Down

The fame did not save the building right away. By 1988, with an aging school next door being replaced, the gym faced possible demolition.

Two preservation groups, Historic Knightstown and Historic Landmarks of Indiana, stepped in and kept the building standing instead of letting it be torn down.

Real Games, Every Season

Instead of turning the gym into a roped-off movie museum, the town kept it a working basketball court. High school teams from around Indiana now travel there just to play on the same floor as the film.

The gym hosts 80 high school basketball games a year, according to a Sullivan Daily Times report cited on Wikipedia. A 2024 Associated Press report put annual visitor traffic to the town at more than 50,000 people a year.

The gym also hosts an annual all-star showcase, the Hoosier Reserves Athletic Classic, and a coaches clinic each year, drawing players and coaches from across the state.

Still a Working Gym

Forty years after Hoosiers hit theaters, the Hoosier Gym is not a static movie set. It is open to the public, admission is free, and a real scoreboard still lights up on real game nights.

The underdog story that made the gym famous is fiction. The gym itself never stopped being real.
