One of the best-selling children's characters of all time started out as a private joke to make a sick little boy laugh. There was no publisher, no plan, and no idea it would ever leave the mailbox.

A Letter for Noel

In September 1893, artist and naturalist Beatrix Potter sat down to write to five-year-old Noel Moore, the son of her former governess, Annie Moore.

Noel was stuck in bed recovering from scarlet fever, and Potter wanted to cheer him up.

She had no idea what to say, so she wrote a picture letter instead of a normal one.

The letter, dated September 4, 1893, opened with the line: "I don't know what to write to you, so I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits, whose names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail, and Peter."

Illustrations ran down the margins, sketched straight onto the page.

The Real Peter

Peter wasn't invented out of thin air.

Potter based him on her own pet rabbit, whom she had kept for years and sketched repeatedly, building up the kind of detailed studies that made her illustrations feel so alive.

The rabbit died on January 26, 1901, at nine years old.

In a privately printed copy of the book, Potter wrote a small tribute to him: "In affectionate remembrance of poor old Peter Rabbit, who died on the 26th of January 1901 at the end of his 9th year."

The rabbit that inspired one of the most famous characters in children's literature never lived to see the book published.

But his name did.

Rejected, Then Self-Published

Potter tried to interest publishers in turning the letter into a proper book, and multiple publishers turned her down.

Rather than give up, she printed 250 copies herself through Strangeways & Sons on December 16, 1901, with plain black-and-white illustrations.

It was enough to change a publisher's mind.

Frederick Warne & Co. picked it up and released The Tale of Peter Rabbit commercially on October 2, 1902, with a first print run of 8,000 copies and Potter's now-iconic color watercolors.

40 Million Copies Later

The book was an immediate hit.

Potter moved fast to protect it too.

By 1903, she had already designed a Peter Rabbit doll and registered it at the Patent Office, the start of a long line of official Peter Rabbit merchandise that continues today.

More than a century later, The Tale of Peter Rabbit has sold an estimated 40 million copies worldwide.

It all traces back to one afternoon when a governess's son was sick in bed, and a family friend didn't know what else to write.
