Under a quiet street in Melbourne Beach, Florida, something enormous was stuck in a very small pipe. It took a road crew, a wildlife agency, and an emergency team to figure out that the something was a 410-pound manatee.

Chasing Warm Water

In early February 2026, a cold snap pushed manatees across Florida to hunt for warmer water. One young male swam out of the Indian River and up into a storm drain running under Melbourne Beach.

Once inside the narrow pipe, he could not turn around. He kept crawling forward until he hit a dead end and got stuck.

Melbourne Beach Vice Mayor Terry Cronin later said the manatee was likely "seeking warmer water during that cold snap and went up the pipe from the Indian River and got stuck."

Ten Thousand Pounds of Concrete

On February 9, 2026, crews from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Brevard County Fire Rescue, Brevard County Public Works, the University of Florida's Animal Technical Rescue team, and a private towing company converged on the street above him.

They removed more than 10,000 pounds of concrete to open a vertical path down to the pipe, ran ventilation fans to keep air moving, and finally hoisted the manatee out onto a sling.

FWC marine mammal biologist Blake Faucett called the moment he came free "significant."

Healing at SeaWorld

The manatee, soon nicknamed Melby, was driven to SeaWorld Orlando as part of the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership.

He arrived with cuts and scrapes and an infection, and vets started him on antibiotics right away. Within 48 hours he was strong enough to move into a deeper pool alongside other manatees.

Over the following weeks, keepers watched his blood work steadily improve and his wounds close up, while a local fundraiser called "Bring Melby Home" tracked his recovery.

105 Pounds Heavier

When Melby was pulled from the drain, he weighed 410 pounds and measured 6.9 feet long.

By the time SeaWorld cleared him for release, he weighed 515 pounds and had grown to 7.3 feet, a gain of 105 pounds.

On April 7, 2026, almost exactly two months after he got stuck, Melby was released near Ballard Park in Melbourne, not far from the storm drain that trapped him.

He swam back out into the same waters he had been chasing warmth from in the first place, this time under his own power and headed the right way.
