A Cat Needed Intravenous Fluids After Mating With Five Females in One Night

In October 2019, a pet hotel in Guangdong Province, China made an expensive mistake. Staff at the hotel let an unneutered male Russian Blue cat named Xiaopi roam freely overnight — despite his owners specifically telling them he hadn't been neutered.

A Very Long Night

CCTV footage from the hotel told the full story. Between 10:40 PM and 5:00 AM, Xiaopi mated with at least five female cats. By morning, the exhausted tom was barely able to move.

His owners, Mr. and Mrs. Zhao, were called in to find their cat in a sorry state. A veterinarian had to put Xiaopi on a glucose drip to help him recover from the dehydration and exhaustion.

The Aftermath

The pet hotel admitted full responsibility for the incident. They apologised to the Zhaos and offered 500 yuan (roughly $70 USD) in compensation to each owner whose female cat became pregnant as a result of the overnight escapade.

The story went viral on Chinese social media, with many people pointing out the obvious lesson: always neuter your pets — and always make sure the people looking after them know the situation.

Is This Medically Possible?

Absolutely. Male cats are capable of mating multiple times in quick succession. Veterinary sources confirm that sustained mating activity can lead to significant exhaustion and dehydration. That said, Xiaopi may also have been dehydrated from a lack of food and water during the overnight period, which would have compounded the problem.
