Morgan Freeman Turned His 124-Acre Ranch Into a Bee Sanctuary

Morgan Freeman is an Oscar winner, a voice of God in two different movies, and — since 2014 — a beekeeper on a 124-acre ranch in Mississippi. When most people his age are slowing down, Freeman decided to wade into one of the most urgent ecological crises of the century: the collapse of global bee populations.

From Ranch to Sanctuary

Freeman's property sits near Charleston, Mississippi, surrounded by rolling pastureland. In 2014, he converted the entire spread into a bee sanctuary, importing 26 hives from Arkansas and planting acres of clover, lavender, and hundreds of flowering trees to keep them fed. He also began feeding the bees sugar water himself, learning the craft of beekeeping from the ground up.

No Suit, No Stings

The detail that caught the world's attention: Freeman doesn't wear a protective suit. Not a veil, not gloves, nothing. He told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that the bees have never stung him — not once. "There's a certain amount of respect involved," he said, as if negotiating peace treaties with insects were the most natural thing in the world.

Why Bees Matter

Freeman's motivation was Colony Collapse Disorder, a phenomenon that has wiped out roughly 30-40% of U.S. honeybee colonies in some years. Bees pollinate about one-third of the food humans eat — without them, crops from almonds to blueberries would collapse. By turning his ranch into a sanctuary, Freeman created a private conservation effort on a scale most nonprofits would envy.

The Voice of the Bees

There's something fitting about it. The man whose voice narrated the birth of the universe in documentaries now spends his mornings walking among buzzing hives in rural Mississippi, no armor, no fear.
