When Bryan Cranston flung a pizza onto a rooftop for Breaking Bad, he had no idea it would become one of television's most accidentally contagious moments. The crew had stocked up on backup pies and rigged a prop on the roof just in case. Cranston threw it anyway - and nailed it first try.

The Throw That Started It All

The scene appears in Season 3, Episode 2, "Caballo sin Nombre," which aired in March 2010.

Walter White, locked out of his own home after his wife Skyler discovered his secret life, hurls a full pizza onto the roof in frustration.

The production team had prepared a rubber prop pizza on a wire as a backup, but Cranston asked to do it himself.

"I fling the pizza and I get in the car and I drive away," Cranston later recalled.

"And I did all that and I hear clapping as I'm driving back. I look up and there's the pizza." One take. Done.

A Real Family. A Real Roof.

The house used for exterior shots is a real, occupied private home at 3828 Piermont Drive NE in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Padilla family purchased it in 1973 and still lived there while the show aired.

Once fans discovered the address, the trouble started.

At peak, the family reported more than 400 visitors a day showing up outside - many of them carrying pizzas.

The 6-Foot Fence

In October 2017, the owners had seen enough.

They built a 6-foot-tall wrought-iron fence around the property to stop strangers from wandering onto the lawn and lobbing food at their home.

The story made national news.

By then, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan had already gone public with a blunt appeal on the Better Call Saul Insider Podcast in 2015: "There is nothing original or funny or cool about throwing a pizza on this lady's roof. It is just not funny. It's been done before. You are not the first."

The House Goes on the Market

Owner Joanne Quintana - daughter of the original Padilla family - put the property on the market in early 2025 for $3.99 million, citing decades of relentless fan traffic including mysterious packages addressed to "Walter White."

After a year with no takers at that price, she relisted it in February 2026 for $400,000.

"This was our family home from 1973, almost 52 years," Quintana told KOB4.

A fictional chemistry teacher made it uninhabitable.

Gilligan was right.
