Most drawbridges lift one end or swing open at the middle. Duluth, Minnesota's Aerial Lift Bridge does neither. Its entire 386-foot span rises straight into the air like an elevator, and it still does this for nearly 900 Great Lakes freighters every year.

An Odd Start as a Ferry

The bridge crosses the Duluth Ship Canal, the narrow channel that connects the city's harbor to Lake Superior. When it opened in 1905, it wasn't a lift bridge at all. It was America's first transporter bridge, a strange contraption that carried people, wagons, and streetcars across the canal on a gondola that hung from an overhead frame and slid back and forth like a cable car.

The transporter design worked, but it was slow and limited in how much weight it could carry. As Great Lakes shipping grew and vehicles got heavier, the city needed something faster.

The Rebuild That Made It Iconic

Crews converted the bridge into a true vertical lift bridge in 1929, finishing the work in 1930. Instead of swinging a gondola across, the whole 386-foot steel truss span now shoots straight up between two towers, raising 126 feet in about a minute.

That lift opens 141 feet of vertical clearance beneath the span, enough room for the massive freighters that haul iron ore, coal, and grain across the Great Lakes. The City of Duluth still owns and operates the bridge itself.

A Horn Call and an Answer

Ships announce themselves before the bridge ever moves. An approaching captain sounds a long blast followed by two short ones, a signal known on the Great Lakes as the Captain's Salute. The bridge answers with its own horn before the span begins to climb.

People still gather along the pier at Canal Park, right next to the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, to watch the exchange happen. Thousand-foot freighters glide past close enough to the pier that the scale of the ships is impossible to miss.

Still Moving the Freight

The bridge isn't a museum piece. It remains a working part of one of the busiest ports on the Great Lakes. Roughly 900 vessels pass beneath it each year, carrying about 35 million tons of cargo, enough to keep Duluth-Superior the top tonnage port on the entire Great Lakes system.

The city has scheduled a multi-year rehabilitation of the span's steel, paint, and decking, but the work is planned around winter months specifically so the bridge keeps operating through the shipping season. When the ships return each spring, the horn will sound, and the bridge will still answer.
