Joe Walsh has spent five decades as one of rock's most easygoing showmen, the guy behind "Life's Been Good" and "Rocky Mountain Way." Off stage, he carries a story he rarely tells: he was 20 months old when the Air Force took his father.

"Difficult in Maneuvers"

Walsh was born Joseph Woodward Fidler in Wichita, Kansas, on November 20, 1947. His father, Lt. Robert Newton Fidler, was a flight instructor stationed on Okinawa.

Fidler flew the Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star, America's first operational jet fighter, training other pilots on it. On July 22, 1949, his plane collided with another aircraft during maneuvers. He did not survive.

"As far as we could determine, the plane was difficult in maneuvers," Walsh has said of the jet his father flew.

Walsh's mother, Helen, was widowed at 20. She later remarried, and her new husband adopted the boy and gave him his surname: Walsh.

"Just Too Bad," the Government Said

There was no formal network for military families like theirs at the time. Walsh has been blunt about what his mother was told.

"There was no Gold Star designation. That was just too bad as far as the government was concerned."

He has since called himself part of that community anyway. "I'm a member of the Gold Star families," he told Fox News. "I know what that sadness is."

For years, whenever the Eagles were on tour, Walsh visited Walter Reed National Military Medical Center between shows, spending time with wounded troops who were being fitted for prosthetic limbs.

Building VetsAid

In 2017, Walsh started VetsAid, a benefit concert that sends its proceeds to veterans' service groups in whatever city hosts it that year. He books the lineup and takes the stage himself.

The concert has run eight times since 2017: Fairfax, Virginia; Tacoma; Houston; two pandemic years streamed online instead of staged live; Columbus; San Diego; and Wichita, his own hometown, in November 2025. The 2024 show, planned for New York, was called off entirely.

Coming Back in 2026

After the Wichita show raised money for local veterans and student programs, Walsh made a promise in a statement: "We'll see you in 2026, someplace very special."

No date or city has been announced yet. But eight times over, Walsh has kept the same promise: showing up, guitar in hand, for people the country once told his own mother it couldn't help.
