Every spring, a crew of Vietnam veterans lines up along a black granite wall in Washington, DC, with buckets, soft brushes and a garden hose. They are not park staff. They are the men whose war it was, and they have come back to wash the names of the ones who did not.

A Wall With 58,281 Names

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial carries 58,281 names cut into polished granite, one for every American killed or missing from the war. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund confirmed the total again in May 2026: no names were added that year, though several missing service members had their status updated after being identified.

Wind, rain and hundreds of thousands of hands leave a film on the stone. Someone has to wash it off by hand. The National Park Service cannot maintain it alone.

Started By Veterans, In 1996

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 641, based in Silver Spring, Maryland, started washing the Wall in collaboration with the Park Service in 1996. Through 2026, that is 31 seasons of the same veterans showing up with soap and hoses.

On scheduled mornings from spring to fall, the chapter's own guidelines describe the routine: the Park Service delivers buckets, brushes, detergent and hoses, then two teams start at opposite ends of the memorial and work toward the center.

One person handles the hose, wetting several panels ahead. The rest follow behind with soft brushes, scrubbing the granite clean before the water dries. Nobody uses anything that could scratch the stone.

Not Just Veterans

Veterans lead it, but they do not do it alone. Scout troops, school classes, college students and corporate volunteer groups take scheduled washing mornings through the warm months, working the same buckets and brushes under the same rules.

In November 2024, more than 20 volunteers from a company serving veterans joined a washing ahead of Veterans Day. Before the scrubbing began, they moved flowers, photos and mementos left at the base of the Wall out of the way, in silence, then set everything back once the panels were dry.

"It is about honoring the sacrifice and memory of those who served," Jan Scruggs, the veteran who first proposed the memorial, has said of the upkeep.

Care That Never Stops

The chapter calls itself a steward, not an owner, of the Wall. Its own rulebook says the point is never to make the activity feel like entertainment. It is a way for veterans to keep tending the names of the friends they lost.

The washing goes on through the warm months of 2026, just as it has every year since a small chapter of veterans first picked up a hose thirty-one seasons ago.
