Mayberry never existed. There is no dot on a map for it, no county government, no zip code. It was invented for a black-and-white sitcom about a small-town sheriff who never carried a gun. But the real town behind it is very real, and every September it throws a party big enough to nearly fill a football stadium.

A Real Sheriff's Real Hometown

Andy Griffith was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina, in 1926.

He grew up there, and casting agents later pointed to his rural background when they built him a small-town sheriff role for a 1960 guest spot on The Danny Thomas Show. That episode led to The Andy Griffith Show, which premiered on October 3, 1960.

Mount Airy is widely considered the real-life basis for Mayberry, and the town has embraced the nickname ever since. Its official population today is just over 10,600 people.

The Party That Never Stopped

Every September, the Surry Arts Council throws Mayberry Days, a festival built entirely around the show. It began in 1990, timed to the show's 30th anniversary, and has run every year since.

Saturday morning brings a parade down Main Street and Rockford Street, packed with tribute performers, marching bands, local Andy Griffith fan chapters, and a fleet of Ford Galaxie squad cars painted to match the ones from the series. Fans line up for rides in them.

Bigger Than the Town Itself

The crowds have gotten large enough to outnumber the residents.

An estimated 30,000 people attended in 2009. The following year, when the show turned 50, that number roughly tripled to 90,000, packed into a town of just over 10,000 people. Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro estimate the festival and its related tourism bring in about $5 million a year for the local economy.

Whistle If You Know It

Not every contest at Mayberry Days involves food or golf clubs.

One competition asks fans, young and old, to whistle the show's famous theme song from memory, with trophies going to the best in each age group. Cast members and their relatives still show up too. The 2026 special guest lineup includes Karen Knotts, daughter of Don Knotts, and fellow guest Bill Knotts, appearing over the festival weekend.

The 2026 festival runs from September 21 to 27. A fictional sheriff never carried a gun. His hometown still carries the tune every year.
