The car went into the pond nose-first, and it did not stop. Within seconds the hood had vanished under the surface, and the woman behind the wheel was still trapped inside.

The Car Went In Fast

It happened on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at a pond off Walney Road and Westfields Boulevard in Chantilly, a suburb in Fairfax County, Virginia, just outside Washington DC.

A vehicle left the road and plunged into the water. The front end sank almost immediately, and the car kept going down as the driver struggled to get free.

Fairfax County Police officers and Fire and Rescue crews arrived within minutes, but the pond was working against them. Body camera video later showed the water rising fast enough that officers stopped to strip off their heavy protective vests before wading in - extra weight nobody could afford in that moment.

Seconds Underwater

Officer Mohammed Suleiman reached the car first.

He had a sharp tool on hand and used it to break through the driver's side window, then cut through her seatbelt as water poured into the cabin around them both.

Behind him, more officers and passing drivers who had pulled over did not wait to be told what to do. They linked hands and waded into the pond, forming a human chain stretching from the sinking car back to solid ground.

On the recording, one responder can be heard calling out "it's going down" as the hood disappeared beneath the surface mid-rescue.

Pulled to Shore

With the seatbelt cut and the window gone, the chain of officers and bystanders passed the driver hand to hand, back toward dry ground, while the car continued to sink behind her.

She was checked out at the scene and treated for only minor injuries.

Fairfax County Police Battalion Chief Randy Bittinger later said he was "just so thankful that we were all able to work together...at the right place at the right time."

Officer Suleiman, reflecting on cutting her free, called it "one of the best feelings in the world."

Caught on Bodycam

The entire rescue, from the first officers arriving to the driver reaching shore, was captured on official body camera footage that Fairfax County later released.

It shows a fast-moving scene: a sedan disappearing into a pond, a chain of strangers and officers refusing to let go, and a driver who walked away instead of becoming a headline about a car found underwater.
