In 1965, four-year-old Roger Lausier was drowning at a beach in Salem, Massachusetts when a woman named Alice Blaise pulled him out of the water. Nine years later, Roger was on an inflatable raft when he heard a woman scream that her husband was drowning. He paddled out and kept the man afloat until help arrived. The man was Bob Blaise. Alice's husband. Same beach. Same family. Nine years apart.

In 2005, a 12-year-old Ethiopian girl was kidnapped by seven men trying to force her into marriage. When police found her a week later, three lions were standing guard around her. The kidnappers were gone. The lions turned and walked back into the forest as the humans approached.

Elephants are among the most emotional creatures in the world - they have even been known to rescue other animals, such as trapped dogs.

Two boys were caught in a riptide off Panama City Beach, Florida. Their mother, grandmother, and several strangers swam out to help and got trapped too - nine people in total. A man on the beach remembered how ants link their bodies to rescue their young. He started grabbing strangers' hands. 80 people formed a human chain into the Gulf of Mexico and held it for over an hour. Everyone survived.

A man on a unicycle was hit by a double-decker bus in London and dragged under the front wheel. Within seconds, around 100 bystanders surrounded the 12-tonne bus and physically lifted it off the ground to free him. The whole thing was caught on video. He spent a month in hospital but survived. The man was on a unicycle. A hundred strangers lifted a bus.

Binti Jua, a gorilla at Brookfield Zoo, was carrying her own 17-month-old baby on her back. A 3-year-old boy fell 24 feet into her enclosure and landed unconscious. She crossed the pit and cradled the boy against her chest. Her infant still on her back, she carried him to the keeper door. Six other gorillas were in the enclosure. The boy made a full recovery.

In 1971, 17-year-old Juliane Koepcke's plane broke apart at 10,000 feet over the Amazon. She fell still strapped to her seat. Broken collarbone. Maggots in her wounds. She remembered one thing her father taught her: follow water downstream. She walked for 11 days and found a lumberjack camp. She was the sole survivor of 92.

Five University of Georgia Kappa Alpha Theta sisters pulled over on a rural Georgia road on March 15, 2024, when they spotted Cori Craft's SUV sinking into Brier Creek - wading in, freeing her and both sons, then watching Clarke Jones drop to her knees and perform CPR on a four-year-old whose lips had turned blue. About a minute and a half later, he opened his mouth and started crying. The sheriff's office made all five honorary deputies.

A flock of Canada geese knocked out both engines of US Airways Flight 1549 roughly two minutes after takeoff. Captain Chesley Sullenberger had about three and a half minutes to save 155 lives. He landed on the Hudson River - and when NTSB later ran simulations with a realistic 35-second decision delay added, the return to LaGuardia crashed short of the runway. The river was the only choice. Every single person survived.

Eeyore the family dog ran straight to a deputy's patrol car in Destin, Florida when his owner's 86-year-old mom fell on a night walk and couldn't get up - then led Deputy Devon Miller right to where she lay on the sidewalk. She got it on bodycam: "You're such a good boy. Grandma loves you."

Five train cars passed over Wesley Autrey while he shielded a stranger on the subway tracks. His two daughters, ages 4 and 6, watched from the platform. From under the train he shouted: "Let my daughters know their father's okay."

Hollywood casts Danny Trejo as the villain in over 400 films - because he spent 11 years in and out of prison. In August 2019, he was near a Sylmar intersection when a car ran a red light and flipped an SUV with a baby inside. Trejo crawled in through a broken window, and with bystander Monica Jackson freeing the car seat latch from the other side, pulled the child to safety. He kept the boy calm by yelling "superpowers" together. Hollywood was wrong about him.

During the 2022 Buffalo blizzard, Jay Withey knocked on 10 doors begging for shelter. All 10 said no. He smashed a window at Pine Hill School and guided 24 stranded strangers inside. He found cereal in the cafeteria and gym mats for beds. Before leaving, he left a note: "I'm terribly sorry about the window. I had to save everyone. Merry Christmas, Jay." Police put out a call to find him. Not to arrest him. To thank him.

Lane Unhjem's combine caught fire during harvest. Fighting it triggered a massive heart attack, and he was rushed to intensive care. Meanwhile, 60 neighbors showed up with 11 combines, 6 grain carts, and 15 semis. They brought in his entire 1,000-acre crop in just 7 hours. Unhjem later received a heart and kidney transplant, and went home 108 days after the fire.

In 2021, KPMG offered accountant Scott Ruskan a full-time job. He said no and joined the Coast Guard instead. On his very first mission as a rescue swimmer - the July 2025 Texas rising waters - he saved 165 people at a summer camp. He was the only rescuer on scene for four hours.

Harrison Okene was the ship's cook on the Jascon-4 when it capsized in 30 meters of water off Nigeria's coast in May 2013. All 11 of his crewmates died. He survived 60 hours alone in a 4-foot air pocket - in total darkness, in freezing water - before rescue divers arrived to collect bodies. When a diver swam through the flooded cabin with a headlamp, a hand reached out and grabbed him. Okene was alive.

On April 18, 2024, a 71-year-old man's SUV slammed into a guardrail on Interstate 94 in St. Paul and burst into flames - he was unconscious and trapped inside. Seven strangers stopped, ran into the smoke, and pulled him out seconds before the car was fully engulfed. One of them, a UPS driver named Michael Coy, climbed inside the burning vehicle to unbuckle him.

A fire threatened a pet store in Danbury, Connecticut, and strangers did not wait for instructions. Diners, drivers, and passersby formed a human chain outside the building. One by one, they passed out 86 puppy crates. Every single puppy survived because random people became a rescue line.

A motorcyclist slid underneath a burning BMW near Utah State University. The first bystanders tried to lift the 4,000-pound vehicle but couldn't budge it. Then more strangers joined - construction workers in hard hats, students with backpacks, a man in a suit - until a dozen people lifted the burning car off the ground while one man dragged the unconscious 21-year-old to safety.

A stray dog showed up on Day 2 of a 155-mile ultramarathon across China's Gobi Desert and ran 77 miles alongside British runner Dion Leonard, crossing a river and sleeping in his tent. He named her Gobi. She later went missing in a city of 3 million people, and Leonard flew back to search for two weeks with 20 volunteers. They found her with a head wound and a limp - and she ran straight to him. She now lives with him in Edinburgh.

Valerie, a miniature dachshund, escaped her owners on Kangaroo Island, Australia and survived alone for 529 days among kangaroos, snakes, and heat waves. After 1,000+ hours of searching, she was finally caught using strips of her owner's worn shirt as bait. She came back 4 lbs heavier.

In 2017, marine biologist Nan Hauser was diving in the Cook Islands when a 50,000-pound humpback whale began pushing her. For 10 minutes it tucked her under its fin and nudged her toward her boat. She thought it was trying to kill her. Then she saw the 15-foot tiger shark below. The whale had been shielding her the whole time. 28 years studying whales. It had never happened. Caught on camera.

When a gray SUV was T-boned and flipped onto its side at a busy Daytona Beach intersection in March 2024, eight strangers - including Army Iraq war veteran Amy Ridgely - ran over and rocked it back onto its wheels in under 60 seconds. The whole rescue was caught on a traffic camera, and Daytona Beach Police called it the spirit of Daytona Beach.
