History Facts About Rescue

Floodwater covered most of Louisville, Kentucky, in January 1937, and there were not enough boats to rescue everyone downtown. In less than a day, a crew built a floating bridge about 1,800 feet long on empty whiskey barrels. An estimated 75,000 people walked across it to safety over the next four days.

Four Coast Guardsmen took a 36-foot lifeboat into a 70-knot snowstorm off Cape Cod, out to a tanker snapped in two. A wave knocked their compass loose. Then 32 sailors came down a rope ladder into a boat built for about half that many, and one small red buoy light guided them in. That boat still floats at Rock Harbor every summer, cared for by volunteers.

A 7-year-old boy went over Niagara Falls with only a life jacket, and lived. In 1960, Roger Woodward, his 17-year-old sister and a family friend were in a small boat that lost power and flipped above the falls. Two tourists pulled his sister out 20 feet from the edge, but Roger and the friend went over, and the friend drowned. Below the falls, the Maid of the Mist crew got a life ring to Roger and hauled him aboard.

A flock of Canada geese knocked out both engines of US Airways Flight 1549 roughly two minutes after takeoff. Captain Chesley Sullenberger had about three and a half minutes to save 155 lives. He landed on the Hudson River - and when NTSB later ran simulations with a realistic 35-second decision delay added, the return to LaGuardia crashed short of the runway. The river was the only choice. Every single person survived.

When Hurricane Harvey overwhelmed official rescuers in 2017, thousands of Louisiana civilians loaded their own fishing boats onto trailers and drove to Texas. They set up a command centre in a Costco parking lot in Baton Rouge, coordinated rescues via Facebook and a walkie-talkie app called Zello, and pulled more than 5,000 people from the floodwaters across Houston, Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Vidor. They called themselves the Cajun Navy.

Martin Couney ran a Coney Island sideshow. Visitors paid 25 cents to watch premature babies living in incubators. Hospitals were turning preemies away as weaklings. Couney's exhibit gave them state-of-the-art care for free. Parents paid nothing. Over 40 years, roughly 6,500 of the 8,000 babies in his care went home. He wasn't even a licensed doctor.

Thousands of farmers drove tractors into Washington DC in February 1979 to protest farm policy. Police barricaded the tractors on the National Mall, and locals called them a nuisance. A Presidents Day blizzard then buried the city under two feet of snow. The stranded tractors were among the only vehicles still moving. Farmers plowed streets and drove doctors and nurses to hospitals. The city that scorned them started thanking them.

American cavalry soldiers teamed up with German troops who had just surrendered to them. Together they fought off the SS to save more than 1,200 horses in Czechoslovakia. The herd included Lipizzaner mares and foals that stock Vienna's Spanish Riding School. Colonel Charles Reed organized the raid days before Soviet tanks reached the farm. The Lipizzaner bloodline survived the war.

Kate Shelley was a teenager when an 1881 storm collapsed a trestle near her Iowa home. A passenger train with 200 people aboard was still coming. She crawled across a flooded railroad bridge on her hands and knees, lantern blown out. She reached the depot in time to stop the train. Railroads gave her a lifetime pass and a Tiffany medal. Today, Union Pacific trains still cross the bridge that bears her name.

In March 1913, a flood put downtown Dayton, Ohio under 20 feet of water. National Cash Register's president, John H. Patterson, turned his cash register factory into a boatyard. Workers built nearly 300 boats and pulled thousands of people off rooftops. The factory became the city's hospital and shelter. Then Patterson led the campaign for the flood-control dams that still protect Dayton today.

The cruise ship Prinsendam caught fire in the Gulf of Alaska in October 1980 with more than 500 people aboard, many of them elderly. They abandoned ship into lifeboats as a storm built and the swells passed 20 feet. Coast Guard and Air Force helicopter crews hoisted them out in rescue baskets and flew them to an oil tanker. Not one person died.

When the towers fell on September 11, the Coast Guard put out one call on marine radio: all available boats. Ferry captains turned mid-route. Tugboat operators dropped everything. Fishing boats, private yachts, dinner cruises - hundreds showed up. In nine hours, they evacuated nearly 500,000 people by water. The largest maritime evacuation in history. Larger than Dunkirk, which took nine days.

Hurricane Katrina's floodwater covered most of New Orleans in 2005, and among the first rescue teams in were Louisiana's game wardens. On the afternoon of the day the storm hit, 120 wardens drove in from Baton Rouge with boats and were pulling people out of flooded neighborhoods by dark. The department later told the Senate its crews had rescued an estimated 21,000 people.

When milkman Steve Leech spotted a gift shop ablaze on his morning round in Redruth, Cornwall, he didn't wait for the fire brigade - he grabbed 320 pints of milk from his van and doused the flames himself, saving seven neighbouring shops and the people living in flats above them. The National Dairymen's Association named him Hero Milkman of the Millennium.

The greatest finswimmer alive watched a trolleybus carrying 92 passengers plunge into a reservoir in Yerevan. He dove in 20 times through shattered glass in near-zero visibility, pulling people from the wreck one by one. 20 survived. His lungs were permanently destroyed. He never competed again. The Soviet government suppressed the story for 6 years. He named his shoe company Second Breath.

A 29-year-old London stockbroker secretly organised 8 trains that smuggled 669 Jewish children out of Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia in 1939 - forging documents, bribing officials, finding British families - then told nobody for 50 years. In 1988, the BBC invited him to sit in a studio audience without explaining why. The host asked anyone who owed their life to Nicholas Winton to stand. The entire row behind him rose. He had no idea they were there.

Garrett Morgan patented the safety hood in 1912 and had to hire a white actor to demo it - buyers refused to deal with a Black inventor. When an explosion trapped workers 120 feet under Lake Erie in 1916, Morgan descended into the tunnel at 3am wearing his hood and pulled 8 men out alive. The press barely named him. He later sold his traffic signal patent to GE for $40,000.
