Elijah Wood Hauls Crates of Records Into Clubs

The actor who carried the Ring spent one Sunday afternoon at a fan convention with his old costars, at an event billed as 25 years of The Fellowship of the Ring. Near 10 that night he walked into a sold-out Denver show, took the decks and told the crowd, "We have no plan."

Two Men and Their Record Collections

Elijah Wood has been DJing as one half of Wooden Wisdom for more than a decade. His partner is Zach Cowie, a music supervisor and record collector.

They met through mutual friends, the fashion designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy, at an after-party Cowie was DJing, and bonded over records.

They play vinyl and nothing else. Every record in the crate comes from one of their own collections.

"We're limited to the records that we've chosen to bring with us," Cowie told ABC News, "but each one of us has about six hours of music on hand and together, we only have to play for two hours."

"We start playing records in threes initially, just to sort of get a vibe going and to find our pace," Wood said in the same interview. "After that, we go one-for-one."

The sets wander across disco, acid rock, Brazilian, Turkish and African records, and Wood has described a collection as a kind of confession. "It's like that thing when you walk into someone's house and you either see their record collection or their book collection, you can tell a lot about who a person is," he said.

The Night the Room Wore Cloaks

On 31 May 2026 the duo played a Denver show that sold out the moment tickets went up. Around 1,000 people got in.

It was billed as a fantasy-themed event, and the marketing carefully avoided naming the films. The crowd understood anyway.

People lined up from early evening in cloaks and pointed ears. Among the costumes were a hobbit foot, a potato, and the firework dragon that interrupts Bilbo Baggins' birthday party.

Wood was at the convention all day, so the start slipped. Around 8:30, Cowie told the waiting room, "Elijah is still at the convention."

He got there around 10 and the records started moving.

Around 10:40 the duo mixed in the jingle from the underground train at Denver International Airport, and the crowd loved it.

"I expected more of a house music vibe, I didn't know it was going to be all vinyl," one attendee told Denverite. "I didn't expect it to be so international. It was a surprise. But I'm glad."

A second show the following night was added because of demand. It sold out too.

What They Came For

Most fan encounters with an actor of that vintage involve a table, a marker and a queue. This one did not.

"We're not just seeing him sign something," one attendee said. "It's our first time seeing Elijah and we get to see him actually do his thing."

The Crates Are Still Going Out

The Denver nights were not a one-off. Fan recordings of their sets kept appearing through 2026, including one posted from a Chicago date on 15 August 2026, more than ten years after the two of them started.

The format has not changed. Vinyl, out of their own collections, and no plan.
