Rita Wilson Has a Music Career Most People Never Knew About

Rita Wilson has spent three decades being introduced the same two ways: as the actress who played Suzy in Sleepless in Seattle, and as Tom Hanks's wife. What most people miss is that she is also a working recording artist with six studio albums to her name.

A Second Act Nobody Expected

Wilson released her debut album, AM/FM, in 2012, launching a music career most people had no idea she was starting.

She has said a conversation with Bruce Springsteen helped push her past the doubt of starting late. When she asked him why she should begin writing songs now, he told her, "Creativity is time-independent." She has called that idea a turning point.

Sound of a Woman

Her sixth studio album, Sound of a Woman, was recorded in Nashville with producer Dave Cobb, known for his work on major country records. Wilson has described it as her most personal project, with songs about aging, marriage, guilt and self-discovery.

One track, "Spare Keys (Coming Home to Me)," is about learning to feel at home in yourself after decades spent showing up for everyone else.

Small Rooms, Real Crowds

Wilson toured behind the album in 2026, playing a run of City Winery shows in Boston, New York, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Chicago, Nashville and St. Louis.

These are not stadium dates. City Winery rooms seat a few hundred people at tables, closer to a supper club than an arena. Wilson has said that in rooms like these, some of the crowd is eating and talking instead of watching the stage.

That gave her an idea for a song. She wrote "This Song" about scanning a noisy room and finding the one person who was actually listening, just for them.

Still Singing It Herself

Fourteen years after her first record, Wilson is still writing, recording and touring her own songs. She has more shows on the calendar, including a stop in Napa, California, this December. Sound of a Woman is out now, and she is still the one singing every note of it.
