In November 2025, Egypt opened a museum built for one historic purpose: to finally show King Tutankhamun's complete collection in a single place. For the first time since Howard Carter opened the tomb in 1922, all 5,398 artifacts are together under one roof - right beside the Giza pyramids.

The Hunt That Took a Decade

Howard Carter was a British archaeologist who spent years excavating the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, convinced a royal tomb had been overlooked. By 1922, his funding was nearly gone. His patron, Lord Carnarvon, had agreed to finance just one more season.

On November 4, 1922, a worker on Carter's team stumbled across a stone step buried in the rubble. It led to a sealed staircase, then a sealed door. When Carter made a small hole in the inner doorway and held a candle through it, Carnarvon asked if he could see anything. Carter reportedly replied: "Yes - wonderful things."

5,398 Treasures and a Century of Waiting

Carter's team spent the next decade cataloguing everything in the tomb: gilded shrines, a golden throne, chariots, jewelry, weapons, linen garments, and the now-famous gold funerary mask. In total, they documented 5,398 individual artifacts - a collection unlike anything excavated from a single royal burial before or since.

Those pieces went to Egypt's old national museum in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where they stayed for decades. The museum could display roughly 1,700 pieces at any one time - about one third of the total. The rest stayed in storage, out of public view.

A Museum Built for This Moment

Plans for the Grand Egyptian Museum began in 2002. Construction took more than 20 years and cost more than $1 billion. The chosen site - on the Giza plateau, within sight of the ancient pyramids - was deliberate. The museum is now the largest in the world dedicated to a single civilization, housing over 100,000 artifacts spanning 30 Egyptian dynasties.

The Tutankhamun gallery alone covers 7,500 square meters, laid out to display the complete collection in a sequence that follows the pharaoh's life, reign, and burial.

All of It, Finally Together

The Grand Egyptian Museum held its official inauguration on November 1, 2025, with world leaders and cultural figures in attendance. It opened to the general public on November 4, 2025 - exactly 103 years after Carter's team first uncovered the steps to Tutankhamun's tomb.

For the first time in over a century, all 5,398 artifacts from Tutankhamun's tomb are in the same building. The gold mask is there. The chariots are there. The pieces that spent generations in storage are finally visible. Carter completed the excavation in the early 1930s. It took until 2025 - but the world's most famous royal collection is now whole, together, and waiting at Giza.
