Museums Facts

The Lincoln Memorial has a secret: a 43,800 sq ft cave beneath it - nearly twice the floor space of the memorial above. Rainwater seeping through the marble has grown real stalactites, and 1914 construction workers left cartoon graffiti on the columns, now preserved behind plexiglass. It opens as a public museum for the first time on June 25.

A retired gardener borrowed a metal detector in 1992 to find a lost hammer in a Suffolk field. Instead, he uncovered 14,865 Roman coins and 200 pieces of ancient jewelry - the largest late Roman treasure hoard ever found in Britain, valued at £1.75 million. They found the hammer too. It's in the British Museum.

Grant Wood saw a small white house in Eldon, Iowa, in 1930, sketched it that afternoon and never returned. In his studio he painted his sister and his dentist in front of it, pitchfork in hand, faces stern. That sketch became American Gothic. The house still stands in Eldon, and over 12,000 visitors a year stop at the visitor center next door to pose with the pitchfork just like the painting.

Sylvester Stallone painted Rocky before he wrote him. In 1975, broke and typecast as a movie villain, he painted a self-portrait called "Finding Rocky." He carved the eyes with a screwdriver to get the sadness right. The script came later. Stallone never stopped painting after that. In 2021, Germany's Osthaus Museum Hagen gave him his full museum retrospective. Nearly 50 canvases, timed to his 75th birthday.

The Lincoln Memorial hid a secret room for over 100 years. It just opened to the public for the first time. The new $69 million museum has floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Visitors can walk past the columns holding up the memorial above. Lincoln's own signed Emancipation Proclamation and 13th Amendment are inside.

The first art George Lucas ever bought was a drawing of a comic-strip caveman. He was a college student then, years before Star Wars, and the caveman was Alley Oop. He never stopped buying, and that collection has grown past 40,000 works. The museum he built to hold it opened in Los Angeles on September 22.

Sue, the T. rex at Chicago's Field Museum, was found because of a flat tire. In 1990, a South Dakota fossil crew drove into town to fix it, but Sue Hendrickson stayed behind and walked her dog to cliffs the crew had not checked. Giant bones jutted from the rock above her, part of one of the most complete T. rex skeletons ever found. The skeleton still carries her name.

A Virginia woman bought a napkin-sized landscape at a West Virginia flea market in 2009 for $7. She wanted the plastic cow and the doll in the same box. Two years later she learned the little painting was a genuine Renoir worth $100,000. Then the FBI showed up. The museum had reported it missing in 1951.

King Tut's complete tomb collection is on display all together for the first time. Howard Carter found all 5,398 pieces in 1922. For a century, most sat in storage - Cairo's old museum showed only about a third. Egypt's Grand Egyptian Museum, beside the Giza pyramids, opened in November 2025 with all of it under one roof. A century after being found, it's all together at last.
