Mackinac Island, Michigan, has banned cars since 1898!

Jerry Selbee, a retired convenience-store owner from Evart, Michigan, spotted a flaw in a state lottery in three minutes: on roll-down weeks, buying tickets in bulk produced a positive expected return. He and his wife Marge formed a syndicate, drove 900 miles to Massachusetts for every roll-down, and played for nine years. Their group grossed $26 million. All legal.

Lake Michigan turned crystal clear turquoise in April 2015. A Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted something incredible on patrol. Complete century-old shipwrecks sat visible on the lake floor below them. The James McBride was a 121-foot brig that sank in 1857. It rested in 5 to 15 feet of water. Nearby, the Rising Sun wrecked in 1917 with all 32 aboard rescued. The lake holds an estimated 1,500 shipwrecks, and several remain unidentified.

The Mackinac Bridge is Michigan's five-mile 'Mighty Mac.' Every day, only cars are allowed on it. Except one: every Labor Day, Michigan closes it to cars and opens it to walkers. The first walk, in 1958, drew just 68 people. For decades, two lanes stayed open to cars during the walk. Since 2017, all of them close, and walkers get the whole bridge to themselves. Now 40,000 to 65,000 show up every year, with a record 85,000 in one morning.

A 5-year-old boy in Michigan spent over a year in foster care. When his adoption day came, he invited his entire kindergarten class to the courthouse. Every one showed up holding handmade heart signs. Each classmate told the judge why they loved Michael. When the judge asked how he felt, he turned to his new father and said: "I love my daddy." Then they slammed the gavel together.

When Serendipity Books in Chelsea, Michigan needed to move to a new storefront, owner Michelle Tuplin asked the town for help. On April 13, 2025, around 300 residents showed up and formed two human chains down Main Street, passing all 9,100 books by hand to the new location. Ages 6 to 91, all in one line.
