Bill Anderson has been walking onto the Grand Ole Opry stage since John F. Kennedy was in the White House. In July 2026, at 88, he did something no other Opry member ever has: he passed 65 years on the show's roster, and he sang there that same week.

A 23-Year-Old With One Hit and a Whisper

Anderson wrote his first hit before he ever sang one himself. As a young Georgia DJ in the late 1950s, he wrote "City Lights," and Ray Price turned it into a number-one country hit in 1958.

By 1961, his own song "Po' Folks" became a hit under his own name. The Grand Ole Opry inducted him as a member on July 15, 1961. He was 23 years old.

Critics and fans nicknamed him Whisperin' Bill almost immediately. He rarely raised his voice above a conversational tone, and it became his signature sound for the next six and a half decades.

Sixty-Five Years, One Stage

On July 18, 2026, the Opry marked Anderson's 65th anniversary with a celebration on its own stage. He is the first artist in the show's history to reach that number of years as a member.

Fellow Opry members Lorrie Morgan, Crystal Gayle, Rhonda Vincent, John Berry, the Isaacs and Steve Dorff shared the bill with him that night. Video tributes came in from Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, Carly Pearce and Steve Wariner.

Lorrie Morgan presented Anderson with a ring set with a European-cut diamond and a blue sapphire, the traditional stone for a 65th anniversary.

The Stage He Never Left

Anderson retired from the touring circuit during the pandemic. The Opry is largely the only stage he still takes himself.

"In terms of longevity on the show, I've been there longer than everybody that's ever been a part of the show," Anderson said of the milestone.

Opry officials list him as performing there regularly, with more dates already on the calendar through the fall.

Recognized Twice in One Summer

A month after the Opry celebration, the Academy of Country Music gave Anderson its ACM Icon Award at the 2026 ACM Honors on August 19, recognizing a career that has now run more than 65 years as a recording artist, songwriter, author and television personality.

Anderson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame back in 2001. The Opry record is the one that keeps growing every week he shows up.
