Nashville Facts

Bill Anderson first walked onto the Grand Ole Opry stage in July 1961, 23 years old with one hit song. Fans call him Whisperin' Bill for his soft, near-spoken voice. He's 88 now. In July 2026 he passed 65 years as a member, the longest run in Opry history and the first ever to reach it. He retired from touring years ago. He still walks out onto that stage regularly.

The Grand Ole Opry played Nashville's Ryman Auditorium for over 30 years, until 1974, when the show moved to a new building. Workers cut a six-foot circle of oak from the old stage and inlaid it dead center in the new one. Every performer since has stood on that circle to sing. In 2010, a flood swamped the entire stage. The circle was dried out and put back in place. It's still there today.

Michael Sparks paid $2.48 at a Nashville thrift store for a yellowed scroll he thought was an engraving. It was one of only 200 official copies of the Declaration of Independence, printed for John Quincy Adams in 1823. The previous owner had donated it by mistake after his wife cleared out the garage. It sold at auction for $477,650.

Jelly Roll was locked up in Nashville's juvenile detention center as a teenager. He got through it with only a radio and headphones. Years later, he headlined a show at Bridgestone Arena. He used the proceeds to build a real recording studio inside that same facility. He called the launch Redemption Songs. Kids locked up there now write and record in the room that once held him.

Marty Stuart started collecting country music memorabilia as a boy, hiding guitars and costumes in his bedroom. He kept touring and rescuing pieces people threw away for 50 years. It became the largest private collection of country music artifacts in the world: more than 22,000 pieces, including items from Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, and Elvis. He gave it all to the public for free.
