At the exact center of the Grand Ole Opry House stage in Nashville sits a six-foot circle of oak that doesn't match the rest of the floor. It was cut out of a different building entirely, decades before the current one was ever built.

A Stage Built to Remember Another Stage

For more than 30 years, the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its live country music show from the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville.

In 1974, the Opry moved into a purpose-built new home, the Grand Ole Opry House, a few miles away.

Rather than leave the old stage behind completely, workers cut a six-foot circle of oak from the corner of the Ryman's stage floor.

They inlaid it into the exact center of the new stage.

Standing Where the Legends Stood

The tradition that followed was simple. Performers were expected to stand on the circle when they sang, on the same patch of wood where generations of Ryman-era stars had once performed.

Hank Williams and Patsy Cline both built their careers on Opry broadcasts from the Ryman during its run as the show's home.

Today's stars, from bluegrass pickers to arena headliners, still take their mark on that same circle before every performance.

The Night the Stage Went Underwater

In May 2010, the Cumberland River flooded large parts of Nashville, including the Opryland complex.

Floodwater filled the Grand Ole Opry House, submerging the main floor seating, the backstage areas, and the entire stage - circle included.

The Opry didn't perform from its own building again for nearly five months while crews repaired the damage.

Putting the Circle Back

Restoration crews pulled the wood up, dried it out, and treated it before the Opry House reopened.

The circle went back into the exact same spot at center stage, ahead of the venue's return in September 2010.

President Richard Nixon had attended the Opry House's original opening night on March 16, 1974, and even played a few songs on the piano - a detail that still turns up in Opry trivia decades later.

A Small Circle With a Long Memory

The circle survives as one of the only physical links between the Ryman era and the modern Opry.

When the Ryman itself later got a new stage floor, in 2012, builders kept an 18-inch strip of the original oak along the front edge - a quieter echo of the same idea.

Every time a new artist steps up to that six-foot circle, they're standing on wood that predates almost everyone in the room.
