Fishing Facts

In Idaho, You may not fish on a camel's back.

Zebco is the push-button fishing reel your dad handed you. Its maker, the Zero Hour Bomb Company, made oil-well bombs - until its patents ran out. In 1947, Texas watchmaker R.D. Hull brought a fix: a board of nails and a coffee-can lid, an idea from a grocery clerk pulling string off a spool. It worked, and the bomb company renamed itself Zebco: ZEro hour Bomb COmpany. Someone is still handing one to a kid right now.

A teenager was drowning in a rip current at Pensacola Beach. Andrew Smith, a fisherman with a seizure disorder who can't swim, was the only person nearby who could help. He strapped a flotation device to his shark-fishing drone and flew it out. First drop missed. A bystander handed him a second float. Second drop - she grabbed it and held on.

In Laguna, Brazil, wild dolphins herd entire schools of mullet toward fishermen waiting in the shallows, then slap the water or dive deep to signal the exact second to cast the net. Nobody trained them to do this. Fishermen haul in more and bigger fish, and the dolphins scoop up whatever scatters free. It has happened for well over a century, and how the skill spreads between dolphins is still a mystery.

Grady-White has built offshore fishing boats in Greenville, North Carolina since 1959. Eddie Smith was 26 when he bought the near-bankrupt shop in 1968. Buyers later offered him more than $400 million. He turned them down and gave the company away: voting control to a trust, the profits to a charity. Then he paid every worker a bonus scaled to years of service. The hulls are still laid up by hand.

Steve Harvey's father was a West Virginia coal miner who died in 2000. Harvey says that loss inspired him to start a camp in 2009 for teenage boys growing up without a father, and by 2019 it drew 250 boys. He still hosts it today, now on a Georgia ranch he bought in 2022, where the boys are taught to fish.
