Painting Facts

When young and impoverished, Pablo Picasso kept warm by burning his own paintings.

Grant Wood saw a small white house in Eldon, Iowa, in 1930, sketched it that afternoon and never returned. In his studio he painted his sister and his dentist in front of it, pitchfork in hand, faces stern. That sketch became American Gothic. The house still stands in Eldon, and over 12,000 visitors a year stop at the visitor center next door to pose with the pitchfork just like the painting.

Luigi Lo Rosso, a junk dealer from Capri, found a rolled-up canvas in a villa cellar in 1962 and hung it in his family’s living room. His wife called it “horrible.” Experts now believe it may be a genuine Picasso - a portrait of Dora Maar created between 1930 and 1936 - and have valued it at up to €6 million.

Jean-Pierre Osenat was doing a routine appraisal of a Paris townhouse when he noticed a painting on the wall. It turned out to be a Rubens masterpiece - a 1613 work called Christ on the Cross that had vanished for over 400 years, known to the art world only through engravings. Authenticated by microscopic paint analysis, it sold for $2.7 million.

A geologist named Ann Pizzorusso says she solved a 500-year mystery in the Mona Lisa. She matched the rocky landscape behind the subject to Lecco, Italy - the 14th-century Ponte Azzone Visconti bridge, the limestone Alps, and Lake Garlate. Leonardo worked in the Lecco region for years. Not every art historian agrees, but the geological case is hard to argue with.

Leonard Knight arrived in the California desert in 1984 with no art training and no plan - only a message: God is Love. He spent 27 years alone, hand-painting a 50-foot adobe mountain with over 100,000 gallons of donated paint. He slept in a truck at its base, with no electricity or running water. A US Senator called it a national treasure.

Sylvester Stallone painted Rocky before he wrote him. In 1975, broke and typecast as a movie villain, he painted a self-portrait called "Finding Rocky." He carved the eyes with a screwdriver to get the sadness right. The script came later. Stallone never stopped painting after that. In 2021, Germany's Osthaus Museum Hagen gave him his full museum retrospective. Nearly 50 canvases, timed to his 75th birthday.

Bob Ross painted roughly 30,000 works in his lifetime - nearly triple Picasso's output. For each of his 381 TV episodes, he painted three versions of the same scene: one before the camera, one on air, and one for his books. Today, 1,165 of those originals sit in cardboard boxes in a Virginia warehouse owned by Bob Ross Inc., which has never sold a single one. The Smithsonian holds four.
