Before escaping prison, Winston Churchill left a letter of apology on his bed. The letter began: "I have the honour to inform you that as I do not consider that your Government have any right to detain me as a military prisoner, I have decided to escape from your custody."

During World War 1, starving wolves amassed in such great numbers that Germans and Russians had a temporary cease fire to fight off the wolf attacks.

Castor oil is used as a lubricant in jet planes.

In 1918, after the treaty of Versailles (end of WWI), the French Commander-in-chief said "This is not a peace. It is an Armistice for 20 years." 20 years and 65 days later, WWII happened.

In 1999, a fisherman found a love letter in a bottle from a soldier in WWI. He returned said letter to the now deceased widows 86 year old daughter.

In 1932, the Australian military deployed soldiers armed with machine guns to combat an invasion of 20,000 emus destroying farmland in Western Australia. After six days of failed attacks, the emus outsmarted the soldiers, and the military withdrew in defeat.
