Americana Facts

Phil Collins fell in love with the Alamo at age 5, watching Disney's Davy Crockett on TV in London. The Genesis drummer spent decades secretly building the world's largest private collection of Alamo artifacts, more than 430 pieces worth tens of millions. In 2014 he gave every single one to Texas, for free.

Built in 1914, the Belle of Louisville was two days from the scrapyard in 1962. A Cincinnati reporter talked a judge into an auction. Jefferson County bought her and rebuilt her from the hull up. She is now the oldest operating Mississippi River-style steamboat on Earth. This April, at 112 years old, she out-distanced the Belle of Cincinnati to win the Great Steamboat Race. She still churns down the Ohio every week.

In August 1923, a 2-year-old Scotch Collie named Bobbie was separated from his family during a road trip through Wolcott, Indiana - 2,551 miles from home. Six months later, on February 15, 1924, he turned up at his family's door in Silverton, Oregon: gaunt, paws bloody, claws worn to nothing. He had crossed the Continental Divide alone, in winter. He came home.

25,000 grocery workers walked off the job to save the CEO their board had just fired. No union. No pay. No budging. Market Basket's board sacked Arthur T. Demoulas for paying workers too well. 71 stores emptied. Sales crashed 95% in six weeks. Customers drove past Market Basket to shop at competitors. The board folded and Arthur T. bought the company back for $1.5 billion.

Diane Hendricks handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband Bill - a Marine Corps Reserve major in Los Angeles - to find an organization that could give it to a child in need. No such organization existed. So he started one. By Christmas, his Marine unit had collected 5,000 toys. Toys for Tots has since delivered over 708 million toys to 314 million children.

Howard Johnson's was once America's biggest restaurant chain. It had over 1,000 orange-roofed diners selling 28 flavors of ice cream and fried clams. In the 1960s it was bigger than McDonald's, Burger King, and KFC. The chain shrank for decades. Only one restaurant was left, in Lake George, New York. That last Howard Johnson's closed in 2022. Today there are zero left in America.

For America's 200th birthday, all 50 states sent a covered wagon on a year-long ride across the pioneer trails in reverse, west to east. The wagon train pilgrimage covered 17,000 miles and stopped at 249 encampments before nearly 300 wagons and 5,000 riders rolled into Valley Forge together. President Ford met them there and signed the law making Valley Forge a National Historical Park.

Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 is the largest steam locomotive running anywhere on Earth: 1.2 million pounds, 133 feet long. Only 8 of the 25 ever built survive, and only this one still runs. For 51 years it just sat as a park exhibit in Pomona, California. Union Pacific rebuilt it and put it back on the rails. This summer it crossed 14 states and 7,145 miles for America's 250th birthday. It is still running.

Sturgis, South Dakota has 7,000 residents and hosts the world's biggest motorcycle rally, which drew a record 739,000 riders in 2015. It began in 1938 with nine riders racing for a crowd under 200. Pappy Hoel had just opened an Indian Motorcycle shop and formed the Jackpine Gypsies. His wife Pearl counted the bikes the night before and cooked a picnic for every rider. She kept doing it until the 1950s, when the crowd outgrew her kitchen.

In 1936, Carl Mayer talked his uncle Oscar into a giant hot dog on wheels. A Chicago shop called General Body Company made it real. It was 13 feet long and cruised Chicago advertising Oscar Mayer wieners. Ninety years later, six Wienermobiles still roam the country year-round. Two recent college grads called Hotdoggers drive each one. Spotting one on the highway is still a family event.

Zebco is the push-button fishing reel your dad handed you. Its maker, the Zero Hour Bomb Company, made oil-well bombs - until its patents ran out. In 1947, Texas watchmaker R.D. Hull brought a fix: a board of nails and a coffee-can lid, an idea from a grocery clerk pulling string off a spool. It worked, and the bomb company renamed itself Zebco: ZEro hour Bomb COmpany. Someone is still handing one to a kid right now.

Bigfoot is widely called the first monster truck, and it began as Bob Chandler's 1974 Ford F-250. He kept breaking it off road, and local shops did not stock the parts, so he opened a 4x4 shop. In 1981 he drove it over junk cars in a field and filmed the run, and in 1983 more than 68,000 fans packed the Pontiac Silverdome to watch Bigfoot. Bigfoot trucks still tour arenas today.

A cornhusking contest was a race to strip corn by hand, timed to the minute. In 1935, one of those contests drew 110,000 people to a cornfield in Newtown, Indiana. Two aerial bombs marked its start and finish, eighty minutes apart. Elmer Carlson of Iowa husked about 41½ bushels of corn by hand and won. NBC broadcast the whole contest live on national radio. Farmers still compete for the same title every October.
