Wyoming Facts

Wyoming was the first state to allow women to vote.

The state of Wyoming is named after a valley in Pennsylvania.

Wyoming has only 2 sets of escalators in the entire state.

Yellowstone grew a brand new thermal pool over the winter of 2024-25. Nobody saw it happen. Scientists returned to Norris Geyser Basin that April. They found a 13-foot-wide, ice-blue pool that had not been there before. The water was 109 degrees, about as hot as a bath. Sound sensors later traced its birth to tiny explosions in December, January, and February. It had been buried under snow the whole time.

Mouse, a quarter horse, went missing on a backcountry trip in Wyoming in July 2025. He vanished into the Wind River Range, a rugged stretch of mountains near Moon Lake. He survived completely alone through the entire winter. A snowmobiler finally found him alive seven months later. Rescuers floated him out in a whitewater raft towed behind a snowmobile.

A firestorm roared into the Old Faithful area of Yellowstone in 1988. Crews climbed onto the roof of the giant log hotel beside the geyser to save it. The fire threw embers the size of fists, and cabins nearby burned. Roof sprinklers added a year earlier kept the shingles wet, and crews beat out the sparks that caught. The Old Faithful Inn they saved still stands.
