Violet Jessop was aboard the RMS Olympic when it collided with a warship in 1911. She was on the Titanic when it sank in 1912. She was on the Britannic when it hit a mine in 1916. She survived all three and died peacefully at 83 on dry land.

A homing pigeon shot through the breast with one leg hanging by a tendon flew 25 miles to save 194 men trapped behind enemy lines. The survivors carved him a wooden leg. He still stands at the Smithsonian today.

A Stegosaurus skeleton nicknamed "Apex" sold at Sotheby's on July 17, 2024 for $44.6 million - the most ever paid for a fossil at auction. Sotheby's had estimated it at $4 to $6 million; bidding ended in 15 minutes. Of its 319 visible bones, 254 are original fossil. The rest are sculpted.

Josephine Baker used her fame as a jazz superstar to spy for the French Resistance during World War II. She hid intelligence about German troop movements in invisible ink on her sheet music and pinned notes inside her bra - certain no one would dare search her. In 2021, France inducted her into the Pantheon as the first Black woman ever honored there.

Michelangelo was sentenced to death in 1530. He hid for two months in a secret coal vault, drawing on the walls. Those drawings - attributed to him but still debated - lay plastered over for 445 years. In 1975, a director found them under a trapdoor. They are still on the walls.

On September 26, 1983, Soviet Lt. Col. Stanislav Petrov was alone at a nuclear command bunker when the early-warning system showed 5 American missiles inbound - confidence level: HIGHEST. Protocol demanded he report up the chain immediately. He decided the computer was wrong and reported a false alarm instead. The USSR reprimanded him for the paperwork.

A Virginia woman bought a napkin-sized landscape at a West Virginia flea market in 2009 for $7. She wanted the plastic cow and the doll in the same box. He drank bird blood. He killed a passing shark with an empty water jug. His record for longest solo survival on a raft has never been broken.

In 1943, Polish soldiers in Iran bought a bear cub from a young boy, bottle-fed him on condensed milk, named him Wojtek, and enrolled him in the army. At Monte Cassino in 1944, he carried 100-lb artillery shells to the guns without dropping one. The 22nd Artillery Supply Company still uses a bear carrying a shell as its official emblem.

A family bought a small white bowl for $3 at a yard sale in upstate New York in 2007 and kept it on their living room shelf for six years. Under "cargo" they listed moon rock and moon dust samples, and when asked about any condition that might spread disease, the answer was "TO BE DETERMINED." The form was filed at Honolulu Airport on July 24, 1969 - the same day they splashed down.

Hikers called the cops when they found a body melting out of an Alpine glacier in 1991. Police treated it as a routine mountain casualty. Carbon dating later revealed the man had been dead for 5,300 years. A decade later, X-rays found an arrowhead in his shoulder - he had bled to death in minutes.

When Hurricane Harvey overwhelmed official rescuers in 2017, thousands of Louisiana civilians loaded their own fishing boats onto trailers and drove to Texas. They set up a command centre in a Costco parking lot in Baton Rouge, coordinated rescues via Facebook and a walkie-talkie app called Zello, and pulled more than 5,000 people from the floodwaters across Houston, Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Vidor. They called themselves the Cajun Navy.
