Eighteen thousand soldiers formed a Statue of Liberty a quarter mile long at Camp Dodge in 1918. 12,000 men made up the torch alone - just 17 formed the base. Several fainted in the 105 degree heat.

The Statue of Liberty once had no body. For six years, just her arm and torch stood in Madison Square Park. France paid for the statue - Americans had to fund the pedestal. Visitors paid 50 cents to climb inside the arm. Wealthy New Yorkers living right beside it refused to donate. Pulitzer shamed them publicly, and the full statue arrived in 214 crates.

Under the Matterhorn, a glacier has been quietly moving the Italy-Switzerland border. The Theodul Glacier lost nearly a quarter of its mass in just 37 years. The melting shifted the watershed - and the frontier - further into Italian territory. In 2024, Switzerland approved a plan to redraw roughly 100 meters of their shared border. A melting glacier moved a national border.

Old Tom was a wild orca in Eden, Australia. He led a pod that helped whalers hunt whales for 70 years. He slapped his tail at the river mouth to signal a whale had arrived. Sometimes he signaled after dark too. In return, they left the tongue and lips for the orcas. His skeleton still hangs in a museum today, teeth worn into half-circles from towing ropes.

YouTube launched on Valentine's Day 2005 as a video dating site. The slogan was 'Tune In, Hook Up.' Users were meant to upload videos describing their ideal partner - nobody did. The founders even posted on Craigslist to recruit women to the site. Still no takers. So they opened the platform to any video. Less than two years later, Google paid $1.65 billion for it.

Lake Hillier sits on a remote island off Western Australia. For 200 years, it stayed bubblegum pink through every season. Algae and bacteria in the salt crust cause the color, not the water. It is safe to swim in, just not to drink. Bottle a sample and it keeps that same shade. Heavy rain in 2022 diluted the salt, turning the lake grey. Scientists expect the pink to return within a decade.

The first Ferris wheel was built to out-Eiffel the Eiffel Tower at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. It stood 264 feet tall. Each of its 36 cars was the size of a train carriage. Together they could carry up to 2,160 riders at once. After the fair, no buyer wanted the giant machine. In 1906, workers dynamited it into scrap.

Mammoth Cave in Kentucky is the longest cave system on Earth - over 400 miles of tunnels. In 1842, Dr. John Croghan moved 16 sick patients underground, convinced that cave air would cure their illness. At least five died inside. Nearly all the others died within weeks of leaving. The doctor died of the same disease in 1849.

The floor of Hoover Dam's monument plaza is a celestial map. Sculptor Oskar J.W. Hansen embedded 209 brass discs into the terrazzo, each marking a star or planet visible on September 30, 1935 - the night FDR dedicated the dam. It took 200,000 astronomical calculations. If every historical record vanished, a future civilization could read that floor and calculate exactly when Hoover Dam was dedicated.

Two brothers were cutting peat in a Danish bog in 1950. They found a body so well preserved, they called the police. Closed eyes, stubble, a calm face. They were sure it was a recent crime. It was actually Tollund Man, dead for 2,400 years. A braided leather noose was still around his neck. Archaeologists believe he was a ritual sacrifice, not foul play. His last meal, a barley porridge, was still in his stomach.

Stonehenge's central slab is the Altar Stone - a 6-tonne sandstone block. Scientists believed for a century it came from Wales. A study in Nature matched its mineral fingerprint to northeast Scotland, over 750 km away. That is the longest recorded stone haul of the Neolithic era. How Neolithic people moved it there remains unsolved - possibly by sea.

Yosemite ran a real fire waterfall for nearly a century. On summer nights, workers built a bonfire of red fir bark at the edge of Glacier Point. At 9pm, a caller shouted, "Let the Fire Fall!" Workers then pushed the embers off the cliff in a 3,000-foot cascade of flame. The Park Service banned it in 1968, calling it "as appropriate as horns on a rabbit."

Lake Michigan turned crystal clear turquoise in April 2015. A Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted something incredible on patrol. Complete century-old shipwrecks sat visible on the lake floor below them. The James McBride was a 121-foot brig that sank in 1857. It rested in 5 to 15 feet of water. Nearby, the Rising Sun wrecked in 1917 with all 32 aboard rescued. The lake holds an estimated 1,500 shipwrecks, and several remain unidentified.

Death Valley is the hottest, driest place in North America. In February 2024, record rain turned its lowest point into a temporary lake called Lake Manly. It stretched six miles long and three miles wide, but only a foot deep. Death Valley has no outlet to the sea, so a lake this size almost never forms. People still grabbed kayaks and paddled across it.

Machu Picchu has been called the wrong name for over 100 years. A 2022 study found the Incas most likely called it "Huayna Picchu." The name "Machu Picchu" belongs to a different mountain nearby. Explorer Hiram Bingham attached the wrong label in 1911. The world knows it wrong - and it will stay that way.

The Empire State Building's spire was designed as a boarding dock for airships. Passengers would cross an open gangplank 1,250 feet above the street, then ride an elevator down. In September 1931, a small airship docked there for three minutes in 40 mph winds. Two weeks later, a blimp lowered newspapers to the tower on a 100 foot rope. Updrafts made the mast unusable. No airship ever truly docked there.

Yellowstone grew a brand new thermal pool over the winter of 2024-25. Nobody saw it happen. Scientists returned to Norris Geyser Basin that April. They found a 13-foot-wide, ice-blue pool that had not been there before. The water was 109 degrees, about as hot as a bath. Sound sensors later traced its birth to tiny explosions in December, January, and February. It had been buried under snow the whole time.

Pablo Escobar smuggled 4 hippos into Colombia for his private zoo in the 1980s. When he was shot dead in 1993, the animals were abandoned at his estate. They bred freely in the Magdalena River, with no natural predators to slow them. Colombia now has an estimated 170 to 215 feral hippos - the largest population outside Africa - and is spending $10,000 per animal to surgically sterilize them.

Stonehenge was privately owned until 1918. A barrister named Cecil Chubb bought it at a Salisbury auction in 1915 for £6,600 - by some accounts because he got carried away while there to buy dining chairs. Three years later he gave it to the British nation. The government made him a baronet.

Lake Natron in Tanzania is so alkaline (pH up to 10.5) and hot (up to 60°C / 140°F) that animals that die in it get preserved and coated in mineral salts - their calcified carcasses inspired Nick Brandt’s famous posed-statue photos. The twist: this same caustic lake is where 75% of the world’s lesser flamingos are born. The soda flats and toxic water keep predators out, making it the safest nursery on Earth.

Jerry Selbee, a retired convenience-store owner from Evart, Michigan, spotted a flaw in a state lottery in three minutes: on roll-down weeks, buying tickets in bulk produced a positive expected return.
